Welcome everyone! My name is Kimberly Stoppel and I will be your instructor for TEEL 480/481 Corrections in Reading Disabilities. I am so eager to meet each of you and help you strengthen your evaluating and teaching skills in the area of reading. I have been an educator for 29 years. My passion is the early elementary grades where it “all begins!” But, I have experience teaching the intermediate grades in summer intervention programs. I am a second year instructor here at Fort Hays. I have decided that I can make a difference in many “little” lives by working with future educators. It has been an exciting journey so far! I live in Russell, Kansas which is just 30 miles east of Hays. My husband Blaine and I raised 3 wonderful children in a 100 year old two story house that we renovated ourselves 23 years ago. We have two pets, a chocolate lab named Champ and a coal black cat named Spanky. I love to read, (obviously!), cook, and even do some trap shooting once in awhile! My favorite hobby is playing in a hand bell choir at my church. I will tell you a little bit about each of my family members during the first class session via adobe connect! It is my goal to make sure each of you becomes comfortable and competent in administering informal reading assessments and interpreting the results. I look forward to a fun semester!

DeleteHello my name is Jennifer Watson and everyone just calls me Jen. I am a very busy mother of 6. Gunner 17 and graduating this fall, Shane 17 (step-son), Austin 15, Lauren 13 (step daughter), Titus 9, and Christian 8. I was a bus driver for 11 years and this year decided not to drive so I can finish my education. My hobbies are watching my children playing in whatever sport they are involved in at the time. I do love to read and try to get as much free reading done between semesters as I can :). My family and I live in the small town of Archie, MO and my children attend a K-12 rural school. I am excited to get through my last spring semester here at FHSU, and I wish everyone a wonderful semester as well.
ReplyDeleteHello Everyone,
ReplyDeleteI am Jackie Gonzales. I am 28 years old and was born and raised in Arkansas City, KS. After graduating from High School, I attended Barton County College on a dance scholarship. I graduated with my Associates Degree in 2003. In 2006 I moved to Ulysses, KS with my husband, where we still live today. My husband is currently a Physical Education Teacher at Kepley Middle School and the Head High School Wrestling Coach. GO TIGERS! As for me, I currently work full time as the Trust Department Assistant at Grant County Bank. My employers have been wonderful in working my work load and schedule around my commitments for school and internships, and for that I am very grateful. Aside from working, I remain quite busy with my family. My husband and I welcomed our daughter Kyndol in September of 2009. She definitely keeps us on our toes. On any given Sunday afternoon, you will find the three of us snuggled up watching a movie with our two dogs, Cody & Lily. We also have a Lop-eared bunny named Holly. Two evenings a week I can be found teaching dance classes at our local Recreation Center. I opened my dance studio in 2007 and teach 61 children ages 3-16 in Ballet, Tap & Jazz. It is a great hobby for me as it includes two of my passions, working with children and dance. Teaching dance is definitely where I discovered my passion for education and realized my goal of becoming an Elementary Educator. In our “spare time” we enjoy camping, four-wheeling, and fishing, and love any opportunity we have to travel back to our hometown in South Central Kansas to visit family and friends. I am looking forward to another semester at FHSU, and to taking one step closer to my goals. I wish you all a great semester, and hope to get to know you all better.

ReplyDeleteHello! My name is Nicole Schell and this is my LAST semester before student teaching!!! (Can you tell that I'm excited about that??) This is my second time as a student at FHSU. I graduated in 1993 with a BA in English before getting married. We proceeded to have 3 children, so I chose to stay at home until they were all in school full-time. Now, at 40, I finally know what I want to be when I grow up! I have subbed for several different school districts in the past and worked as a Title I reading para for two years at Cheney Elementary School. Those last two years cemented my belief that teaching elementary school is what I should be doing. My husband and children (Mason 17, Calvin 14, and Whitney 12) have been wonderful through this whole process. When I am not studying, I keep pretty busy with all of the kids' academic, music, and sports events. I also like to quilt, read, and write. I have started two novels but never seem to find the time to work on them:) (Imagine that!!) I am also an avid NFL & MLB fan! We also have a dog, Angel, who is 7 months old. She has been such a blessing to our family. I have some past experience with small groups for reading instruction, so I am really excited to learn even more so that my instruction will benefit all the "little readers" I will encounter throughout my career. I love seeing children learn to read and learn to love reading. Best of luck to everyone this semester!!
ReplyDeleteHello Again!
DeleteLooks like we have a couple of classes together this semester! Have a great semester Nicole.
I know the excitement you are feeling with being on the LAST semester of course work! I too am on the last stretch before student teaching. Best Wishes!
DeleteHello! My name is Emily, and this is my last semester before student teaching.
ReplyDeleteI live in Leawood, Kansas, but grew up moving around quite a bit. I was born in South Carolina and since then have lived in Ohio, Michigan, and Kansas.
In addition to being a full time student, I work part time at Archiver’s, which is a scrapbooking store. I always enjoyed scrapbooking and card making, but in the few months I have been working at Archiver’s I have learned a lot and I have advanced my skills in both areas.
Another hobby of mine is reading. Last year I went beyond my goal of reading 20 books… I have given myself a goal of 30 books for 2012. I think that reading is one thing I want to teach kids to love. I also want to be a teacher because it’s one of those professions where you know you’re helping / influencing children. It will be incredibly rewarding to see children succeed. There are several people that have helped me secure my career path. There were several high school teachers. Dana is a SpEd teacher, and I got to know her through being a peer tutor and working with the students with special needs. I also had to English teachers that made me realize teachers are there to work with you, not against you. As a child I was diagnosed with a reading disorder that affects the way I process information. I can read fine, but I cannot retain a majority of the information, which always made it hard to take quizzes and tests over required reading books. Those two English teachers took the time to modify assignments to help me succeed. I want to be able to help students succeed regardless of their abilities.
When I’m not working or busy with school I enjoy spending time with friends and family. I travel a lot to see friends since most of them live in places outside of Kansas. I’m the only kid that still lives at home with Mom and Dad, but I’m okay with that. I have a younger sister who is studying construction science at Kansas State, and I have an older brother that lives in Iowa with his fiancĂ©e. I’m so excited to be gaining another sister this summer! There are also three dogs in the family. Winchester is studying with my sister at K-State, Bailey is my mom’s shadow, and Jefferson is like my child.
Hi! I'm Kate Wieser. I'm originally from Eastern Colorado. This is my second time in college; I have a bachelors from FHSU in Business Education. I worked for two years and decided that I was too expendable and am back.
ReplyDeleteWelcome back Katie, hope your semester is going well and are sucessful the second time around... I am in the same boat as you.

Hello! My name is Megin Gaede and this is my final semester before student teaching next fall! As if being a full time student while working full time isn’t stressful enough, I have also been planning the wedding of my dreams as I marry my best friend March 17!! Yes, it is St. Patrick’s Day and to top it all off, I am marrying an amazing Irishman so we are truly looking forward to the luck of the Irish. We have an amazing story between the two of us and I am thrilled that my four year old son has found a fantastic male role model to be surrounded by every day. I am a blessed woman and cannot wait to complete my family this Spring. Between the two of us, my fiancĂ© and I both attend school outside of our hometown of Hutchinson, Kansas. If sports are considered hobbies, we both enjoy traveling to Lawrence on a regular basis to attend football and basketball events. Recently we took my son to his first KU basketball game, I think we have another avid Jayhawk fan in the family!! I cannot say that we have any family pets, yet, we do enjoy going out to the family farm and riding the horses and tromping through the pasture with the cows. You can never get a little boy out of the city enough. He thoroughly enjoys going “over the river, and through the woods, to grandmother’s house we go!”
ReplyDeleteNice to meet you Megin. This is also my last semester before student teaching in the fall, we're almost there! I was in your situation last spring. I was planning my wedding, going to school full time, and working. I know how stressful that is but try to stay relaxed and just enjoy the wedding planning. You'll miss it when it's all done! I wish you good luck with everything and many years of happiness with your soon to be husband. Looking forward to working with you this semester!
DeleteMy is name is Andrea Duffy and this is my last semester taking classes! This semester I moved back home to Salina, KS and will be taking all my courses online. I am very excited to start student teaching next fall. I have one brother and a sister that is also my best friend. I am originally from Salina and graduated from Salina Central High School in 2008. My favorite thing to do is read. I love reading all types of books and I am obsessed with my Kindle. Since I just moved back home and I'm living with my parents I also get to live with their 3 cats and dog. I enjoy being back home and spending time with my sister and mother. My 8th grade math teacher was the biggest influence for me to become a teacher. She is the most loving, caring, and understanding person I know. I know this semester will tough but I'm ready to tackle it the best that I can!
ReplyDeleteHi everybody! My name is Elizabeth Adams. I live in Tescott, Kansas with my five year old daughter and my husband. We are expecting our second child early this June, and are very excited about that! We have one dog and two horse sized cats. I chose elementary education after having my daughter. I was amazed at how much she wanted to learn. I wanted to help other children learn and grow too. This is my last course before student teaching next fall. I am also subbing this semester for the first time. I am hoping to gain some experience that will help me in my own classroom after I graduate.
ReplyDeleteHi everyone! My name is Kristle Canady. I live in Coffeyville, Ks (Southeast corner of the state!) I have two children. My son Jake is 4 and my daughter Lexie is 18 months. Along with being a mommy and a full time student I also substitute for our local school district. This is my last semester of classes/internships and I hope to student teach in the fall 2012 semester. I can't wait to have my own classroom! I couldn't say what exactly inspired me to become a teacher as it is what I have wanted to be since I was probably 6 years old!
ReplyDeleteMy name is Jessica Bottorff and I am majoring in Elementary Education with a minor in Special Education. I don't think that I necessarily have one individual person who has greatly influenced me toward the education field, but rather just having an array of wonderful mentors and teachers from kindergarten through high school that have really put the success of students first. I could name at least ten teachers that have impacted me enough to want to be like them in the field. Ever since I was little, I have enjoyed teaching and helping others learn, so I feel like it is definitely a passion of mine.
ReplyDeleteOn another note, I currently live in the Ft. Worth, TX area where I moved last fall (the first week of class last semester to be more specific). It has not been an easy transition as it was an 8 hour move out of my home that I have grown up in. I have had some amazing opportunities here, but strongly feel that my heart is still in my hometown area. I am currently engaged and have one dog, and that's about as interesting as that gets! =D I enjoy relaxing, shopping (and couponing!), selling on eBay and just about anything - there isn't much that I don't enjoy getting involved in. I look forward to meeting all of you and wish everyone a happy and successful semester!
Hello Jessica!
DeleteMy dad spend sometime in Ft. Worth before he was even married to my mom. My family and I spent sometime in Dallas one summer and my dad took us to Ft. Worth and showed us around. It was a lot of fun! I know how hard it was for me to move 5 hours away from how to study at Emporia state, I could not imagine being 8 hours. I hope you have a great semester!
Hello, my name is Matraca Forell I am 21 (12/28/90 and a junior here at Fort Hays State University. I am originally from Kensington, Kansas and have hopes to move back to the area to pursue my career as an educator. I am the youngest of three girls. My oldest sister has two adorable children, Austin in 5 and Jenna is 4. I would love to someday be there elementary teacher. I love to be outdoors, I have horses and goats which I love very much. Just recently I was introduced to the goat world and am pleased to announce I am working on becoming more and more involved in rising goats. I also have a coon hound dog named Split who is my pride and joy. He is 5 month old and will begin his training to hunt in a few months.
ReplyDeleteI chose the field of elementary education for so many reasons. For starters I love children, I love watching them learn and grow. I have a passion for children who learn something for the very first time; the look in the face is the main reason why I want to be an educator. I want to be that individual who taught them something new. My mom has been a big influence on my choice to be an educator. She taught Preschool Special Education for twenty-five years and is now an Infant toddler teacher. Her passion has grown with me my entire life and I am so thankful for that.
My name is Sheena Wendt, I live in Cunningham KS. I am a full time nanny (Derek 5, Taylor 3, Lauren 5 months), which I absolutely love and working on an Elementary Education Degree. I am originally from Parker KS (approx. 90 mi North of Pittsburg KS), I moved out here 3 years ago to get my Education degree and see a different part of the state. I live with my fiancé of 2.5 years now, who has two children ages 5 and 12. I will soon have to begin the wedding planning; right now we have a date of April 2013. I am always on a constant go! I enjoy traveling back the 4 hours to my hometown to visit family and going to the lake as much as possible. We play a lot of softball and volleyball in our area and attend a lot of friends/family gatherings, along with high school and junior high sports. My fiancé and his family are farmers, they raise Gelbvieh bulls and wheat crops, and therefore the farm life is unpredictable and anything but slow. I grew up a farm girl and decided to stay a farm girl and would not change any of it! I enjoy being outdoors, especially riding horses and playing sand volleyball on Sundays during the summer (or whenever the weather is warm and not raining). I am not much of a reader, and if I do it is usually a good novel. TV watching is limited due to other activities, except for Sunday and Monday evening CSI: Miami and Hawaii 5-0.
ReplyDeleteI did not have in mind that I wanted to be a teacher growing up. I felt I wanted to try something else considering over 50% of my family (including aunts, uncles, grandparents, parent) are/were teachers. I attended Hutchinson Community College for Radiology, but determined that was not in my area of interest. Finally realizing education might be in my blood and a good choice for me, I began FHSU virtually. I LOVE children and the excitement and knowledge they bring to us each and everyday! The days are always different and never dull with children.
I was very concerned about the virtual learning and how well I would succeed, but it was the only option I really had. This is my 3rd year and it has gone extremely well and I am down to my last 2 semester from graduating. Hooray!! I wish to teach K-3rd in the near future.
I wish all the best for the semester, and hope to learn from stories and experiences from others throughout this program.
My name is Sara Dreiling and I'm from Great Bend, Kansas. I graduated in 2009 and attended Barton Community College my freshman year. I transferred here to FHSU my sophomore year and love it here! It just far enough away from home (about an hour), but not too far in case I feel the need to go home. I have a year old chocolate lab named Macy. She's a bundle of energy and I love her!
ReplyDeleteI am currently working at an after-school program at Wilson Elementary School here in Hays and it is so much fun. It is so cool to take what I have learned in the classroom and use the skills to help me become a better educator/mentor to the kids I work with. I have known for quite a while that becoming an educator is what I want to do. I had MANY wonderful elementary school teachers and a few significant secondary and post secondary teachers that have made a great impact on my life and made me realize how much I want to have that impact on young children! I hope to be student teaching by this time next year and wish to teach between Kindergarten and 3rd grade afterwards. It is exciting knowing how close I am to having my own classroom.
Hope everyone has a great semester!
Hi Sara,
DeleteI lived in Great Bend from 2001-2003 and also went to Barton County Community College. I danced on the dance team at Barton and meet some amazing friends from Great Bend! Looks like you would have been in Middle School around the time I lived there. My how time flies! Have a great semester and congratulations on being this close to having your own classroom!
My name is Kristi Fletcher and I am from Paola, KS. I have an AA with an emphasis in psychology from Butler County Community College. I was a para-educator at the local elementary school for 3 years before deciding to stay home with my daughter and go back to school 3 years ago. I have a 13 year old son and a 3 year old daughter. I am married to a military man. I have a rat terrier named Tinkerbelle and she has 6 week old puppies of which my family has convinced me to keep 3. So we technically have 4 dogs now.
ReplyDeleteI am getting my degree in elementary education with a minor is SPED. I will be doing my student teaching in the spring of next year. I am hoping to get my endorsements in middle school and wanting to find a position there after my daughter starts school. The best part about teaching is seeing the light come on when a child finally comes to an understanding of something that they have been struggling with!
Hello Krisiti! I am always interested in hearing people are from an area close to mine. I grew up in Parker KS attending Prairie View High School. Best Wishes for the semester and through the rest of your schooling!
DeleteHello everyone, my name is Angela Sears and I am currently living in St. Joseph, Missouri. My family and I are originally from Sulphur Springs, Texas were I was born and raised, but we relocated here for my husband's job 4 years ago. I have been married for 18 years and have two girls, Katie age 15 and Kassie age 11. I also have a very spoiled Maltese named Daisy.
ReplyDeleteI spent the first 13 years of my career as a licensed practical nurse, but never felt completely satisfied. When my girls reached school age, I started volunteering in the schools and eventually took a para job. I knew after the first week what I was missing in my life. At that time, online classes were not very common so attending classes on campus was difficult because we were moving about every 18 months with Mark's job. Thank goodness I found FHSU 4 years ago and started my classes online. I will graduate in the fall with a BS degree in Elem. Ed. and a minor in SPED.
I currently work full-time as a first grade para at Edison Elementary in St. Joseph. This will be my fourth year with the school district. I can't wait to have my own classroom!!
Good luck everyone and have a great semester!
Good to meet you Angela! I'm so glad you found your true passion in education. I think that's what many schools are missing now, true passionate educators. Sounds like we will graduate at the same time, I'm so excited for that! I can't wait to have my own classroom either, I have so many ideas for it already. You're probably familiar with it but pinterest is a great web resource for finding both classroom layouts and useful teaching tools. I've gained many useful ideas for my future classroom on that site.
DeleteGood luck this semester!
Hi Angie! You're not too far from where I am! I'm in Leawood, KS! I think it's great that people realize what they were doing isn't for them, and find a career path that they are passionate about! Good luck to you this semester!
DeleteShannon, I LOVE Pinterest. I've been on it for a while now, and have a whole board for just school / classroom related things!
Hello all, my name is Shannon (Haug) York. I’ve been married to my high school sweet heart for six months now and we’ve started our newlywed lives up in Delta Junction, Alaska! I am a born and raised small town Kansas girl but moved up here to Alaska almost two years ago. It has been a very rewarding yet hard experience. Being far from family is not my favorite thing, nor are the long dark winters, but the beautiful summers and adventures to be found make it worth it. I also have troubles with the time change. Alaska is three hours behind Kansas so I constantly have to remind myself of that for schoolwork and such. Right now it is the dead of winter up here. Today it was a whopping forty below zero and we have about five hours of daylight. Since I can’t get out much I spend a lot of time indoors exercising, doing schoolwork, and taking care of my two dogs and two ferrets. I have one sable ferret named Midget and one albino ferret named Jack. My oldest dog, Oreo, is a springer spaniel who traveled with me all the way from Kansas and my youngest is a four month old siberian husky puppy named Khloe. When I can get out I really enjoy photographing my pups and this beautiful place. I also work as a substitute teacher and part time tutor. I’m hoping my tutoring experience will help me succeed in this course.
ReplyDeleteThis is my last semester of full classes at FHSU. I will begin student teaching in the fall and graduating that December! Finally! I’m so excited to start teaching here in Alaska. I’ve always had a passion for helping children and I finally got to utilize that passion last semester through my internships. There is no better feeling than making a difference in a young child’s life. I’ve had many great educators in my life and I believe they are who influenced me to want to become a professional educator. I’ll never forget the feeling I felt when a teacher took specific time out of their busy schedule to help me understand a concept, to help me see things differently, and to simply teach me. I want my life to consist of helping children succeed. I want to make a difference in children’s lives one way or another. I think that being an elementary educator means providing all students with a meaningful learning experience. To me that includes teaching them the curriculum in a clear understandable way as well as providing them with the tools and building blocks they need to succeed and thrive in their individual futures. Even if they’re only six or seven year olds their lives can be greatly impacted and changed by one year with a good elementary educator.
I’m excited to get this semester rolling and I’m looking forward to collaborating and working with all of you! Good luck!
Goodness! I would lose my mind if it were only light out for 5 hours in the winter... and 40 below? In the summer isn't it mostly light out?
DeleteI'm also in the same boat, this being my last semester of actual classes! Good luck to you this semester!
Hello Emily! The summers are wonderful! On my birthday, June 23, the sun is out ALLL day and ALLL night. It literally sets halfway and then comes right back up. Some people think the sunlight would bother them but I just love it.
DeleteHello, my name is Stacey and I am a Sr. at FHSU. I live in Tacoma WA which is a city 30 minutes outside of Seattle. I have been married for 10 years to my wonderful husband Reggie and have two beautiful children my daughter Rejie (named after her Dad) and my son Stacee (guess who he’s named after). We also have a pomeranian named Charlie. I enjoy reading in the winter and camping in the summer. My husband and kids were my biggest influences for choosing the field of education. My children would always say how they wish that I were their teacher which motivated me to go back to school. My husband is a teacher and we plan to spend the school year teaching and summers traveling the world (on a teacher’s salary). Good luck to everyone this semester.
ReplyDeleteGreat to meet you Stacey! Thank you for creating a skype group for this class. It will be a great tool throughout the semester. We don't live to far from one another. I'm in Delta Junction, AK. You're closer than the Kansans in the class anyways! My husband and I love to travel as well. Next summer we plan on venturing off to Australia. It sounds like we have a lot in common. I'm looking forward to working with you! Good luck!
DeleteHi everyone,
ReplyDeleteMy name is Tammy Meneses. I live in Wichita, Kansas. I have 3 great children 12, 10, and 8 and two great dogs that we rescued from the Humane Society. We own a Habitat House that we helped to build while helping my neighbors build their homes. I fell in love with teaching while homeschooling my children for a while. After a divorce I went into the work force so I could take care of my children on my own. I started working for the Wichita school district about 5 years ago as a special education paraeducator and have loved working with the children. I find myself surrounded by so many wonderful teachers that really have a passion for teaching. My fall mentor teacher just won the Golden Apple Award! I hope to Student teach in the spring. I do not have much free time but I love to spend time with my children reading and walking my dogs. I recently took up running to get back into shape. I ran my first 5k on the 1st. This semester I think will be a definite push to be very organized. When talking to other students about the classes that we take at Fort Hays most of them are really impressed how much we learn and the types of classes we take. They don’t feel like they get as good content as we do. So I’m excited to be at Fort Hays again this year and I hope you all have a great semester. I can’t wait to learn from each of you.
Thanks,
Tammy
Hello Tammy, it is nice to meet you. I love how much passion you have for children just my how you talk about the children you have previously worked with. Thank you for sharing your story with us. I look forward to getting to you know and your thoughts about helping students with reading difficulties throughout the semester.

Hello everyone,
ReplyDeleteMy name is Cody Dunlap, and I am a senior here at FHSU. I am from Natoma, KS, which is about 45 miles NE of Hays. My mom, dad, brother, and sister still live in Natoma.
I transferred to FHSU from Kansas University, where I attended school for one year. It's been three years here at FHSU, and I can hardly believe I'm in my last semester of on-campus classes for my undergrad degree in El. Ed.
My faith is very important to me. Also important are my family and friends. I do enjoy sports as well.
Here's to a fun semester!
I would also like to mention I had great elementary and high school teachers all through school, but don't have one in particular that influenced me to go into Elementary Education. I have always just loved kids, and wanted to make a positive impact in their lives.

ReplyDeleteHello Fellow Classmates!
ReplyDeleteMy name is Carrie Shinogle, and I am from a very small town in Kansas called Plains. I live on my dad's family homestead, and have since September 26, 1989. My dad and grandpa built the house where my family lives, my dad, mom, and older brother by a year moved to the homestead in July of 1989, and then in September I was born. Three years later (1992) my sister was born. My dad works for COOP in Plains, and my mom is a stay at home mom, who does substitute secretarial work at the high school and junior high. Christoper my brother works at Keating Tractor as a diesel mechanic, and my sister Christy is attending Colby Community College to become a Vet Tech. Both my dad's dad, and my mom's mom live in the Plains area. My uncles, aunts, and cousins are over the U.S. Also on the homestead lives cows, dogs (my favorite), and cats (my least favorite). I attended elementary, junior high, and high school there in Plains. After graduating I attended Seward County Community College where received my Associate of Arts. I was unsure at first of where to go after SCCC, but I then decided to transfer to Emporia State University. I then transferred to Fort Hays due to it not working out at ESU. When I am not doing homework, or working, I attend church which is very important to me, read, write poems, and hang out with family and friends. I selected the field of education because it has been something I have wanted to do since I was little. I was unsure the level that I wanted to teach until I was in grade school, my elementary teachers were great an influenced me a lot. The made a big impact on my life, and I was to do the same for young kids.
I would not even know where to begin when it comes to building a house! You made a smart choice in attending FHSU instead of ESU. I hope you enjoy your time here!
DeleteHello everyone, I am Stephanie Lindsay. I grew up in a small town in central Kansas. After graduating high school I attended Garden City Community College I then transferred to K-State. I went to K-State for a year and then transferred to Hays.I started out as a business major and decided I really didn't like my business classes and have always liked children so I decided to switch my major to elementary education. I am a fifth year senior and plan on student teaching this coming fall.
ReplyDeleteI have a dog, Vegas, that is an Australian Shepard / blue heeler mix, she keeps me pretty busy. I also have two horses, Sport and Phoenix.
Steph, hope your semester is successful and you are able to enjoy your last semester of classes. Good luck!
DeleteHello! I'm Kyleigh Edwards. I'm a senior at FHSU and looking forward to student teaching next semester. This is my second year in Hays. Before that, I spent two years at Hutchinson Community College, which is were I was born and raised (the town, not the college). I have one older sister who is a hair stylist in Lawrence (Go Jayhawks!). She has a golden retriever that she treats like a daughter, so I guess that makes me an aunt.
ReplyDeleteI spend a lot of my time at practice and meets. I'm a thrower on the track team. I throw weight during the indoor season and hammer and discus during the outdoor season.
I have pretty much always wanted to be a teacher. After I got over wanting to be an astronaut in the third grade anyway. Having such a huge impact in a child's future is so inspiring to me. I am so excited to get out there and teach!
Hello virtual classmates! My name is Alison Busch and I am in my last semester of classes at FHSU! In the fall of 2012, I will be completing my student teaching and am so eager to have my own classroom full of students. My current job for the last four years, has been as a Para-professional educator under the speech pathologist at our local school. We provide services for over 40 students ranging from preschool to high school levels. Some of our students have exceptionalties including autism, emotionally disturbed, cognitively delayed, and sensory sensitivity on top of having reading below grade level and sometimes articulation delays. These students have many strengths and challenges and I am looking forward to this class to learn different ways to present reading materials to them in a way that is conducive to them learning the material!
ReplyDeleteMy family and I are originally from Florida, and moved to Kansas 4 years ago so my husband could receive his masters degree in Geology at K-State. The move has been an adjustment for us, as the winters here are so cold. We had to make a huge investment in socks and jackets after we moved! My husband and I are the proud parents of three great children, ages 14, 9, and almost 8. We spend most of our time at athletic practices and games. My children are involved in soccer, baseball, dance, and cheerleading, which keep us all busy. We also have 2 dogs, Fefe and Chloe. A cat named Snowbell, a fish, and a hermit crab! Our family loves to go camping, boating, and visiting the beach when we have vacation time!
I look forward to getting to know everyone! And good luck to you this semester and in all your educational endeavors!!!!

ReplyDeleteHi Kyleigh,
After reading your blog, I wanted to tell you that it is nice to meet you! I am also in my last semester of teaching and will be completing my student teaching in the fall of 2012. Like you, I am excited to be finishing up and being on the down hill slope of my classes. It is a huge accomplishment! After I graduate, I cannot wait to be a positive influence in children's lives and encourage them to believe in themselves and to be all they can be!! I look forward to this semester in getting to know you better. Good luck to you in your educational endeavors, we are almost there!
Hi all, my name is Michelle Avritt. I live in Sublette, KS with my six year old son and our dog Rudy. Like many of you, I am returning to college to pursue a second degree. I plan to student teach next Spring!
ReplyDeleteHi everyone my name is Marei Hinzman and I was born and raised in Hays. I am currently working on my bachelors in Elementary Education with my minor in special education. I am actually wanting to receive my masters in Special Education. I chose special education because I have a lot of experience with individuals that have disabilities (my brother and sister have autism). Before I went into Elementary Education I received my bachelors in Speech-Language Pathology and then took some time off to work as a para. I loved working as a para, I worked with students that had minor disabilities to very severe. My favorite color is blue, I like penguins, I am an adrenaline junkie, and I love fatty foods.
ReplyDeleteHello everyone, my name is Becky Pinick. I live in Derby Kansas, but I grew up in a small town called Douglass where I went from preschool through 12th grade. I am one of 9 in my family and I have 20 nieces and nephews. I recently got married to my high school sweet heart this past May. No children yet but we have a fantastic dog named Blitz. I really don’t have many hobbies school and work keep me very busy. This semester I am taking 13 credit hours including internship 3. This will be my last semester before student teaching and I couldn’t be more excited! I work as a substitute special education paraprofessional and a substitute teacher. I am 22 years old and my birthday is October 18th. I choose the field of education because of my love for learning. I want to be able to share this love with young people and I feel that it is a very important profession because these students are the ones that will be running our society in the very near future. So in a way I feel that this was the best way to help improve our society while touching lives. When I was little I told myself that no matter what career I went into I wanted to change the world in some way, and I feel that as a teacher I will do this one student at a time.
ReplyDeleteHello classmates, my name is Jena Simms. I have been inspired by many wonderful teachers. I had a male 6th grade teacher that has been a positive and encouraging force in my life.
ReplyDeleteNow that I am a mother of three boys I have been inspired by many of their teachers. A few teachers come to mind that are exceptionally respectful to their students. This is a trait that I aspire to have as a future educator. I plan on encouraging students with positive words and actions just as others have done for me in the past.
Hi,
ReplyDeleteMy name is Megan Booth. I grew up I'm a small community of 1600 people, Greensburg, ks. I'm a senior here at FHSU. I transferred here from Pratt Community College with my associates degree. I'm excited to be done with school and start teaching my own class.
Hey! My name is Amanda Lewallen. I am originally from Holyrood, KS. I grew up there and attended a small 1a school called Quivira Heights. My mom moved to Hays after I graduated so I guess I live in Hays now. My family is everything to me. I do have 1 sister and she has made me the best thing ever, an aunt! I love being an aunt and have learned a lot about behaviors and parenting from helping my sister out. I am now a senior at FHSU. I plan on student teaching next fall. In my free time, which is little, I love to play any sport. I really enjoy being outdoors and of course spending time with my amazing family. I have always wanted to be a teacher. I don't know what it is about children but I really enjoy them. Honestly, I think my real passion in life is to be a mom, but until then I'll stick to teaching! :)
ReplyDeleteHi all, my name is Brooke Scheib, I am from rural Kansas and a family of five. I have a younger sister, Jessica, and a younger brother, Hunter. I am excited to say that my brother will be joining me and my sister at FHSU in fall 2012! Being relatively close in age, we have always been a competitive bunch! Both of my parents are school administrators, so I guess you could say that education is in my blood. I am starting to see my bachelors degree coming to an end, as student teaching is just around the corner. My major is Elementary Education with a Special education minor. With this degree, I would like to teach in an inclusion classroom with any grade K-5. I really enjoy working with students who have learning challenges, I like the creativity it allows me when developing my lessons! Currently I work at The Center for Health Improvement, teaching water aerobics, lifeguarding, and working in the play center. Although I love all departments that I work in, my favorite is the play center where I interact with infants to twelve year olds. I like to incorporate the strategies I have learned through FHSU to manage the activities the children engage in. I am really looking forward to what I will learn during this class!
